What is HCAHPS and How ViSi Impacts It

In today's ever-changing healthcare environment, it's important now more than ever for hospitals to do all that they can to ensure patients and families feel safe when they are hospitalized.

In order to promote improved clinical outcomes and the quality and safety of the care patients receive, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) developed a hospital Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) program in 2010 which looks at clinical outcomes, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores, safety, efficiency, and cost reduction.

The HCAHPS survey is the first national, standardized, and publicly reported survey of patients' ratings of their hospital experience. While many hospitals conduct surveys on patient satisfaction for their own use, there was no national standard for publicly reporting information on patient experience and satisfaction before the HCAHPS survey was formulated. This allows valid comparisons to be made locally, regionally, and nationally.

The HCAHPS has three main goals:

  • Produce data about patients' perspectives of care, providing objective and meaningful comparisons of hospitals on topics important to consumers
  • Public reporting of the survey results, incentivizing hospitals who have improved quality of care; and
  • Enhancing accountability in health care by increasing transparency of the quality of care provided, in return for public investment.

For background, HCAHPS scores are derived from 27 item questionnaire sent to patients after discharge that covers topics such as "the hospital experience (communication with doctors, communication with nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, cleanliness of the hospital environment, quietness of the hospital environment, pain management, communication about medicines, discharge information, overall rating of hospital, and recommendation of hospital)." These scores are then tallied and are publicly reported in an easily accessible format and allow patients to choose hospitals based on an overall star rating and patient survey rating (both of which have 1-5 star rating systems). Who wants to stay in a 2-star establishment when you have the option of staying at a four or 5-star establishment?

By introducing ViSi Mobile into your hospital, staff can not only impact patient safety, save the hospital money by reducing events such as pressure ulcers and unanticipated deaths, the incorporation of ViSi Mobile surveillance monitoring can also help improve nursing workflow and VBP reimbursement.

ViSi Mobile can impact HCAHPS scores by improving the patient experience. We have patients who have shared their experience with ViSi Mobile and its liberating comfort, being able to move freely while continuously being monitored. ViSi enables staff to respond to patient physiologic alerts, improving their perception of staff responsiveness, avoid disturbing their sleep with nighttime vital sign monitoring, improving their perception of the quietness of their hospital environment, and improve their overall perception of the quality of care they are receiving because they know staff are always keeping an eye on them, even when they are not in the room.
